Our tour in this amazing town was supposed to be wheelchair friendly. Effectively all this meant it was on mostly level ground without steps. There were eight of us packed in a tiny bus, but when we met our guide things were greatly improved. Mirjana was friendly and charming and her enthusiasm for her city was most infectious. She told us the story of Emperor Diocletion while taking us around the astonishing remains of his fine palace. I have never seen a Roman structure with the roof intact and this amazing palace is now below ground with more modern homes actually built on top of it.
This tower was built over Diocletian’s tomb
Leaving Split we drove to Trogir passing this Roman amphitheatre at Salona. Our final destination proved very tiring and incredibly hot so we devoured ice creams in a convenient café before heading back to Split.
