Our fifth glorious day in Iceland began at 4.15am with a sun which never really set. We docked in Akureyri after sailing up the beautiful wide fjord Isafjordur. The modern cathedral can be seen.
Our tour took us first to Godfoss over which the pagan gods were thrown in 1000 when Iceland became Christian. Amazing lava formations are in the river here.
They can also be seen everywhere around Lake Myvatn. There are extensive lava fields and collections of pillars said to be trolls, around Dimmuborgir!
In the distance there are flat topped volcanoes which formed under heavy ice. It is amazing to be sunbathing in northern Iceland.
At Namaskard there are amazing geothermal fields beside the Namafjall Mountain, mud pools, sulphur deposits, steam vents and fumaroles.
